Kazakhstani scientists from the Institute of Zoology, Drs. Andrei Gavrilov and Almat Abayev, began working with Dr. Todd Katzner of the National Aviary, USA and Dr. Kristine Smith of WCS to launch collaborative efforts with GAINS. Initial work and training sessions began in the southern part of the country at Sorbulak Lake in the Almaty Region. This early work was intended to standardize field sampling techniques. Work sampling wild birds in southeastern and north central Kazakhstan will continue through the spring migration period, into the summer breeding season, and will conclude with extensive studies of birds on southbound fall migration. For more information, contact Dr. Katzner at todd.katzner@aviary.org
